Tips from the Techs: What is Unified Communications?

Sep 02, 2021

You may have heard us talk about Unified Communications, but what is it?

If you've never shopped for business phone or communications systems,

you might not know what that is. Here's a quick FAQ to explain.

So... what is it?

Unified Communications (UC) is a platform or suite of integrated hardware and software that work together to optimize business communications.

How is it unified?

Usually, in UC systems, your desk phone works with apps on your cellphone, tablet and computer so they all work together. They all share a single web-based interface, so users have a consistent experience and set of tools no matter what device they are using. For instance, you can listen to a voicemail message from your desk phone, mobile phone, or from your desktop.

How is that different from a regular phone system?

For one thing, it's not limited to just phone calls. As part of their suite of tools, UC systems can include file and desktop sharing, video meeting and webinar software, instant messaging, remote work tools, and much more.

They do regular phone stuff too - the desktop phones have all the features you would expect of a similar high-end multiline telephone system.

Why would I need that, when we have phones and Zoom and Dropbox and Slack and 365... and... and...?

There are several ways that a single UC solution really shines when compared to a hodgepodge of apps. One login keeps things simple. One centralized phone book saves time switching back and forth between apps looking for contact information. Messages are sent to every device, those that only go to one app or device are easier to get lost or overlooked. Most importantly, UC solutions are much more secure. Your important files and data are safer from hackers and mishap in one cloud-based location, rather than spread over many separate apps and devices.

Are all UC systems the same?

Not at all! They are all similar in the basics of what they are, but can be very different. One of the best things about UC systems is how flexible they are. You don't need to buy a bunch of stuff you don't need - get just the right hardware and features to fit your company's individual needs. We partner with several suppliers, such as Wildix, Zultys, and Allworx, to offer a wide selection of phones and systems to choose from, so you get the right fit.

Best of all, versus a traditional phone system, a UC system can often save you money.

If you share with us some information from your last phone and internet bills, we can tell you how much a new system could save you!
